Understanding COPD can help you recognise symptoms early and seek treatment before significant lung damage occurs.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"cs-callout\">\n  COPD is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, yet many people don&#8217;t know they have it. The most common cause is smoking, but long-term exposure to air pollution, dust, and chemicals can also contribute.\n<\/div>\n\n  <\/section>\n\n  <!-- SYMPTOMS -->\n\n  <section class=\"cs-section\">\n    <h2 class=\"cs-section-title\">What Are the <em>Symptoms<\/em>?<\/h2>\n    <p class=\"cs-section-subtext\">COPD symptoms usually develop slowly and worsen over time:<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"cs-cards\">\n  <div class=\"cs-card\">\n    <p class=\"cs-card-title\">Chronic cough<\/p>\n    <p class=\"cs-card-desc\">A persistent cough that lasts for months or years, often called a &#8220;smoker&#8217;s cough.&#8221; This is usually one of the earliest symptoms.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"cs-card\">\n    <p class=\"cs-card-title\">Phlegm production<\/p>\n    <p class=\"cs-card-desc\">Regular production of mucus or sputum from the chest, especially in the morning.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"cs-card\">\n    <p class=\"cs-card-title\">Breathlessness<\/p>\n    <p class=\"cs-card-desc\">Feeling short of breath during activities that used to be easy, such as walking up stairs or carrying groceries. This tends to worsen over time.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"cs-card\">\n    <p class=\"cs-card-title\">Wheezing<\/p>\n    <p class=\"cs-card-desc\">A whistling or squeaking sound when breathing, especially during exhalation.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"cs-card\">\n    <p class=\"cs-card-title\">Frequent chest infections<\/p>\n    <p class=\"cs-card-desc\">Being more susceptible to colds, bronchitis, and pneumonia that take longer to recover from.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n  <\/section>\n\n  <!-- CAUSES -->\n\n  <section class=\"cs-section\">\n    <h2 class=\"cs-section-title\">What Are the <em>Causes<\/em>?<\/h2>\n    <p class=\"cs-body-text\">The most common cause of COPD is long-term exposure to lung irritants. The single biggest risk factor is smoking, but other factors can also contribute:<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"cs-cards\">\n  <div class=\"cs-card\">\n    <p class=\"cs-card-title\">\u98df\u7dca\u7159<\/p>\n    <p class=\"cs-card-desc\">The #1 cause of COPD. Both current and former smokers are at risk. The more you smoke and the longer you smoke, the higher your risk.<\/p>\n    <p class=\"cs-card-tag\">Up to 75% of COPD cases are in smokers or ex-smokers<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"cs-card\">\n    <p class=\"cs-card-title\">Air pollution and occupational exposure<\/p>\n    <p class=\"cs-card-desc\">Long-term exposure to air pollution, secondhand smoke, dust, fumes, and chemicals (e.g., in certain workplaces) can damage the lungs and lead to COPD.<\/p>\n    <p class=\"cs-card-tag\">World Health Organization<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n  <div class=\"cs-card\">\n    <p class=\"cs-card-title\">Genetic factors<\/p>\n    <p class=\"cs-card-desc\">A rare genetic condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency can cause COPD, even in people who have never smoked.
