Types of Support Available
Different levels of mental health support:
Crisis support
Immediate help for people in acute distress or with suicidal thoughts. Available 24/7 through emergency services and suicide prevention hotlines.
Call 999 for emergencies
Counselling and psychotherapy
Talk therapy with trained professionals to help you understand and manage your feelings. Available through public services, NGOs, and private practitioners.
NIMH
Psychiatric treatment
Medical assessment and treatment by psychiatrists, including medication management for depression and other mental health conditions.
Hospital Authority
Peer support groups
Connecting with others who have similar experiences. Support groups provide encouragement, understanding, and practical coping strategies.
SAMHSA
Online and telephone resources
Helplines, online counselling, and mental health apps that provide accessible support without needing to leave home.
How to Find Help
Start with your primary care doctor or district health centre. They can assess your needs and refer you to appropriate mental health services. You can also contact mental health organisations directly for information and support.
Talk to your doctor
Your GP or District Health Centre can screen for depression and refer you to specialist services if needed.
Contact a helpline
Mental health helplines provide immediate support, information, and referral to appropriate services.
Reach out to NGOs
Non-governmental organisations like Mind HK and the Mental Health Association of Hong Kong offer free or low-cost services.
