Care for Vision: A Single Platform for Retinal Disease Management
A three-component platform for Roche Hong Kong’s Ophthalmology division, serving clinicians, patients, and case administrators from one governed record.
The Challenge
Retinal disease management — for conditions such as wet AMD, DME, and RVO — involves a coordination problem as much as a clinical one. Patients move through a governed pathway from screening to assessment to intervention to referral, ophthalmologists across more than 500 practices need a consistent disease-specific record to work from, and every patient-support request in between needs to be routed, approved, and audited under the same rigour applied to the clinical data itself.
What We Built
KYWH designed, built, and now supports a three-component platform under a single architecture:
Disease Management System
An EHR-style patient record system with disease-specific tracking dashboards, giving ophthalmologists and care teams a shared, structured view of each patient’s treatment history and status.
Patient Mobile App
Built in Flutter, giving patients self-monitoring tools, appointment booking with reminders, secure messaging with their care providers, and the ability to apply directly for patient-support programmes from their phone.
Case Manager Workflow & Approval Portal
A multi-level routing and approval engine for patient-support requests, with document management, e-signatures, rule-based escalation, and real-time status tracking — governing each request through screening, assessment, intervention, and referral with a full audit trail at every step.
Compliance & Governance
Given the sensitivity of the data involved, compliance was treated as a delivery deliverable, not an afterthought:
Formal Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA)
Conducted as part of the SI&D scope, specifically for a system handling sensitive personal health data under Hong Kong PDPO.
Full audit trails
CRUD-level activity logging, administrative access tracking, and correction history across the platform.
Compliance logging and outcome auditing
Built directly into the workflow engine, not layered on top.
Role-based access control (RBAC)
Three interconnected components, each serving a distinct role group (clinical staff, patients, administrators) with access scoped accordingly.
Outcome
Live in production
The platform is live in production, supporting 500+ ophthalmologists and 600+ patients annually under pharmaceutical-industry data-privacy standards with a formal PIA on record.
