Understanding Breathing Techniques
Simple exercises to help manage breathlessness.
Why This Matters
Breathlessness can be frightening and limiting, but simple breathing techniques can help you feel more in control. These exercises work by slowing your breathing, reducing trapped air, and helping your lungs work more efficiently.
What Are the Key Techniques?
Here are the most effective breathing techniques for managing breathlessness:
Pursed-Lip Breathing
Breathe in slowly through your nose for about 2 seconds, then breathe out gently through pursed lips (like blowing out a candle) for 4-6 seconds. This creates back-pressure that keeps airways open longer, helping to release trapped air.

Diaphragmatic (Belly) Breathing
Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Breathe in slowly through your nose, focusing on pushing your belly out while keeping your chest still. This uses the diaphragm more effectively and reduces the work of breathing.

Positioning for Easier Breathing
Lean forward slightly while sitting, with your arms supported on your knees or a table. This position helps your diaphragm work more efficiently and can quickly reduce breathlessness.

Coordinated Breathing
Breathe out during the most effortful part of an activity (like standing up or lifting) and breathe in during the easier part. This prevents breath-holding and reduces strain during daily tasks.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Practice Makes Perfect
Practice these techniques daily, even when you’re not breathless. That way, they’ll become second nature and you’ll be able to use them automatically when breathlessness occurs.
Who Can Benefit
These techniques are helpful for anyone experiencing breathlessness, whether from COPD, asthma, heart conditions, anxiety, or simply age-related changes in lung function. They’re safe, free, and can be done anywhere without special equipment.
